Our guest speaker this week was Steve Dotterer, Principal Planner at the Portland Bureau of Planning. He has been with the bureau since the 1970s.

Mr. Dotterer presented a slideshow (yes, actual slides, not powerpoint) on the how land use has shaped transportation and vice versa from the founding of Portland up to the 1960s or so.

A few weeks ago there was a post at Portland Transport about there being scholarships available from the city to take this transportation planning class. It sounded interesting, and I've wondered about the processes and considerations that go into the decisions made on road building, speed limits, etc., so I filled in the (web) application and sent it off. I was one of the people who got scholarships, and the class started Wednesday night.

The class runs for 10 weeks, with a guest speaker followed by lecture / discussion. The speaker for this week was Sam Adams, city Transportation commissioner.
